
Good article from Evan West about the Mudkids, and the state of Indianapolis hip hop. I can be fairly critical of hip hop articles, especially in Indy, but Mr. West touches on some interesting topics regarding the “scene”, or lack thereof, in this city.
This extends even into national acts. I remember when the Clipse came through downtown Indy, and I was at the front of the stage with no problem…. there was no more than 200 people there. The next night in Chicago was nuts, as you would imagine, packed in a sweaty basement party.
This article is a good discussion about the struggles of Indianapolis live music, and a nice highlight of Indy’s most recognizable and consistent hip hop group: The Mudkids.
“One criticism leveled against Indianapolis is that it has never found its own identity,” says Rhymefest. Indeed, if you ask an average hip-hop fan outside of Indy to name an artist who hails from here, expect a blank stare . . . In many ways, hip-hop artists fight the same uphill battle faced by countless local musicians: Indianapolis, at its heart, is not a strong live-music town. “It’s a very lazy culture here,” says Josh Baker. “Most people would rather sit on the couch or go to a movie.”
