I remember when I first heard about Cody (pre-Phrenology’s “The Seed”, and pre-pre-Chappelle’s Block Party) on OkayPlayer (which just got a facelift, so check it out)
Anyway, I heard some live footage (pre-Youtube days in ’02, so audio was dominant) and went searching for where to buy his album. It was difficult because I kept spelling his name “Chestnutt” as opposed to “ChesnuTT”. Search engines also weren’t as smart 6 years ago.
Long story short, I end up ordering the double disc “The Headphone Masterpiece” (all recorded on his 4-track recorder in a basement) on his website. I couldn’t find it at Best Buy or even local record stores. Because I wanted it so bad, I sent an irritated email to the email address on the site when I didn’t have the CD within 2 weeks. Well, low and behold, it was Cody’s manager, and he sent me an equally shitty email. Kinda funny exchange. We eventually reconciled, and I met Cody when he was in town with the Roots. Cool, weird, honest, funny dude. Headphone Masterpiece is packed with goodness, but here’s a few of my favorites:

You should probably post the e-mail exchange.
